Can Never Go Back

I laid awake on the stiff mattress in my hotel room that night. The song, My Eyes Adored You by Frankie Valli was going through my mind-”My eyes adored you, though I never laid a hand on you, my eyes adored you.” It was one of my favorites, because it reminded me of one of my fondest memories. Kate had allowed me the honor of carrying her books home from school one day when we were in the eighth grade. That experience had always stayed fresh in mind, because it was so special to me. I literally thought that I just might float away. I remember being so distracted by her hair, her eyes, and well…just every part of her, that I could hardly keep my eyes on where I was going. She smelled so pretty too-so fresh and clean. It was like a cross between strawberries and springtime. I missed those days of innocence.
I had just about dozed off to sleep, while beginning to dream about her, when I heard a soft knock at the door. I bolted up in the bed. I would have thought that it was Toby, but he never did anything softly. I jumped out of bed and headed for the peep hole.

When I was a young boy, I threatened to run away one too many times. Mom shocked me when she suddenly and unexpectedly said goodbye and helped me to pack my things. She told me that she would miss me, but that she wanted me to be happy. I sat with my Winnie-The-Pooh teddy bear on the hillside overlooking our home for half the day. I made the long journey home before night fall. I was welcomed back as long as I promised that I would never threaten to run away again, because it made my mom sad. I felt that I had been gone for so long, and it was such a comfort to be back where I belonged. I told my mom that Winnie-The-Pooh was afraid and needed to be there.
I was feeling much the same way now, as I did then. Kate had always seemed like home to me, and I hadn’t seen her for so long. It was that way from the very beginning. I’m not sure that it was love at first sight, since we were in the sixth grade, but it sure was something. From the moment that I first saw her, I knew that there was something special about her-something amazing. I can envision her today just as I saw her then. She was wearing a long black dress and had her hair pulled up in a cute little bun. I know it sounds silly, but she really did glow. She always glowed, and it brought such warmth to me.
Upon first noticing her, I turned to Susan and told her that we were broken up. Then I let go of her hand and went straight over to be with Kate. It seemed like it was a part of me to want to be with her-and to want to be with her forever. Susan was my Girlfriend at the time. As much as anyone can be a Girlfriend at eleven years old. She had always been there. She lived on my street and we knew each other since kindergarten. I just sort of took her for granted.
